ANSWER: Griffth J. Giriffith is also known as Colonel Griffith Jenkins Griffith. He was born on Jan 4, 1850 in South Wales. He moved to the United States in 1865 and worked in Pennsylvania before relocating to California.

Griffith J. Griffith worked in San Francisco in the publishing field. He became manager of the Herald Publishing Company where he learned about the mining industry. He became a wealthy man in the mining industry and later, he moved to Los Angeles.

In 1862, he purchased acres of land of the Rancho Los Feliz Mexican land grant and donated 3,000 acres to the City of Los Angeles. Griffith called his gift to the city “a Christmas present.” The city honored Griffith’s purchase by naming the park after him. In July 2014, Griffith Park is newsworthy because Griffith Park’s memorial tree known as the George Harrison Tree was devastated by beetles.

NOTE: Griffith Park is the second largest park in the United States after the famed park in San Diego California.
